Physical Education
The purpose of health education is to help students acquire an understanding of health concepts and skills and to apply them in making healthy decisions to improve, sustain and promote personal, family, and community health.
The purpose of Physical Education is to help students acquire the knowledge, processes, and skills needed to engage in meaningful physical activity both in the present and for a lifetime. The process of participating regularly in a physical active life style will lead to personal enjoyment, challenge, satisfaction, and a health-enhancing level of personal fitness.
Physical Education Policies
The Commonwealth of Virginia requires Health and Physical Education as a basic part of the 6th & 7th grade curriculum.
Grading
Student’s grades will be based upon physically participating in class. All students begin each grading period with a grade of 100 participation points. Grading adjustments for participation in physical education are as follows:
- Student does not participate: 10-point reduction
- Lack of effort: 5-point reduction
Students without proper clothing and/or shoes may be required to participate in an alternate activity and will lose participation points. All clothing must be worn properly (shorts/pants around the waist).
-
Consequences for not dressing properly for PE:
-
1st time: Warning and minus 5 points
-
2nd time: Lunch detention, parent contact and minus 5 points
-
3rd time: Administrator Consultation
-
The student’s overall grade for each nine weeks is a combination of 50% Health and 50% Physical Education.
Injuries & Illness
We realize that there are times that students may be restricted from participating in physical education due to a sickness or an illness. On those occasions that you feel your child should not participate, please send a note with a daytime phone number where you can be reached. This note will excuse a student from two days of participation. After two day’s a doctor’s note will be required to excuse a student from participating. Students excused from participation, will be given an alternate assignment, as we cannot grade an injured student on their active participation in class.
Accidents
All accidents or injuries should be reported to your child’s physical education teacher before the students leave for their next class. If an injury occurs during class, the student will be sent to the nurse for further evaluation.
